About Reiki

Reiki is a natural healing technique that any one can learn. It is Japanese for ‘universal life-force energy’ and relies on the practitioner channelling this energy by positioning their hands in a sequence on the head and/or body. The energy passes through the body’s electro magnetic grid known as the ‘meridians’. This holistic method is effective and versatile. The practitioner can vary the practice to suit the client’s needs, e.g. sometimes offering distant and/or mental healing where an appointment is not convenient or appropriate. Reiki also complements all orthodox treatments so can largely run alongside other methods. It is a non invasive treatment in which the client remains fully clothed. A full body treatment/session is usually for approximately 1 hour.

The Usui system was introduced by Dr Mikao Usui (1865-1926) in the nineteenth century, Japan. He was a religious man who intensified his study of Christianity, Buddhism and Sanskrit to get to the truth the ‘miracles of healing’. During a 21 day pilgrimage in the mountains he is said to have been presented with symbols and mantras which he recognised from scriptures and went on to use these in his healing practices. He opened a clinic in Tokyo in 1922 and his methods of treatment have been handed down from Master to student ever since. Usui Reiki found its way to the western world through a Japanese woman, Hawayo Takata who had profound ill health. It was her extensive travel in USA and Canada and the subsequent training of 22 Reiki Masters that has indeed accelerated the growth of Usui Reiki (and other systems) today.

Today, there still remains 3 degrees/levels of Reiki to achieve before becoming a Reiki Master. However, the Master level is sometimes taught divided into phase 3A (self mastery) and 3B (teaching) components with the option to complete 3B at a later stage. A ‘3A’ degree holder is a ‘Master Practitioner’. This is at the total discretion of the Reiki Master.
